Artificial intelligence (AI) systems for pathology may appear to compete with manual pathology, as they enable the assessment of thousands of cells and application of complex scoring schemes beyond the capacity of a human pathologist. However, this technology advancement should be viewed as a collaborative opportunity, rather than competitive, as AI systems will never be able to fully replace pathologists’ tissue expertise.
